The National Assembly (Parliament) of Ecuador has approved a bill to eliminate the so-called green tax, a tribute owners of cars pay since 2012.
The measure, which sought protection of the environment, will be annuled since 2020, a decision the plenary session took with 90 votes for and 29 against.

As the Parliament explained, debts accumulated by taxpayers total about US$300 million.

Of that number, assembly members stated that those who currently maintain more debts for this tax are those who have less, sometimes with amounts up to 50 percent of the vehicle’s value. The payment of quotas pending capital was established to alleviate this problem and with a term of up to three years. If possible, it can be paid in full.

The bill will be sent to the Executive, in order to observe or sanction it.
